ANTENNAS: NECESSARY IN EVERYDAY LIFE

Antennas are electrical devices that can transmit any type of electromagnetic waves, specifically, radio waves. Antennas are able to transmit signals through air and space, even water, soil, and sometimes rock. They are used for point-to-point communication for radios and radio and television broadcasts. Antennas are also essential for radar and space exploration. Antennas work on the same general principles of electromagnetic fields and electrical current, though there are several different types that provide different functions.

Antennas are an arrangement of conductors that generate or use electromagnetic fields to change the voltage and create and alternating electrical current within the terminals of antennas, thus generating a signal. Antennas generally operate on a narrow frequency range and can receive and radiate signals equally well.

There are two main types of antennas. One is Omni Directional which radiates energy equally in all directions. They are simple and inexpensive and can transmit and receive signals in all directions. However, the antenna can radiate or receive signals in the direction the rod, known as the antenna blind cone.

The other type is Directional and radiates energy more in one specific direction, though all antennas radiate some energy in all directions. In order to deflect the spare energy and direct important transmissions, several changes can be made. Elements including conducting rods and coils include signal strength, while adjusting physical properties such as length, spacing, and orientation, can also produce a directional radiation pattern.

There are many variations of antenna models that provide and describe such as vast amount of functions. Some antennas can radiate in three dimensions, others can operate on high frequencies (UHF), and others are just theoretical models. However, without this simple principle of the transmission of electromagnetic waves, technical advances and communications would be quite impossible.
